Sleep?

We stop and get gas in Baltimore, Maryland. Lisa keeps me in the car while Grant pumps the gas. When I say I need to go to the bathroom, because I have been in the car almost all day, she goes with me. She keeps her gun in her purse with her hand on it.

Honestly, it makes me kind of nervous that she keeps holding the gun in her hand. What if she accidentally sets it off and shoots me? Or what if she shoots somebody else? I kept worrying she was going to shoot the kid who was in the bathroom stall next to me.

Thankfully, that doesn’t happen. We get back in the car and get back on the road. We don’t stop again until just outside of Richmond, Virginia. That’s when we pull into a hotel for the night.

Maybe this is it. Maybe this is when I can make my great escape. She has to sleep at some point, right? But when we get to our room, Lisa pulls a chair in front of the door and sits down in it, the gun in her hand.

Now that I’ve gotten a good look at Lisa, I’m surprised. I expected her to look crazy and unhinged, but she looks so normal.

Lisa has light brown hair that she currently has slicked back into a bun. Not one hair on her head is out of place. She has on a pair of nice jeans, a pair of boots, and a leather jacket. All of her clothes look new and clean. She’s also a very thin woman. A lot of people from Spy School are more muscular than her, even I am. But she’s just really skinny. Like, if I passed her on the street, I would think maybe she was sick. Of course, I know that she is sick, but her sickness is in her head, not her body. Still, maybe her sickness is affecting her appetite.

I look from Lisa to Grant. Grant seems to be studying her, too, and I can see the wrinkle in his brow as he looks at her. I can see the concern.

I wonder if Lisa is a good wife to him. He’s never really talked about her. He does talk about his daughter a lot, he loves her, that much is very clear. But he’s never said anything about Lisa before. Maybe they were having problems. I am very curious, but I don’t ask right now. It’s not the time.

Grant looks from Lisa to me, and he offers me a smile. “You should get some sleep. You’re going to need it.”

Sleep seems impossible, but the way he said that, I’m going to need sleep... it stands out to me. I get the feeling that Grant is going to help me get out of this situation, I just hope he doesn’t try and sacrifice himself to do it.

Still, I nod at him and climb into the bed that is farthest away from Lisa.

Lisa doesn’t even glance my way.
